Sean Dawson's latest series of works take photographic images of destroyed interiors as the starting point. Dawson then fragments the imagery, developing kaleidoscopic or symmetrical abstractions which seem to float in-between implosion and explosion, caught in a state of flux. Employing a mannerist aesthetic and the excesses of the baroque, the painting surface is worked to a point of overindulgence. Every inch of the canvass loaded with tiny marks of colour consistent with the broken up nature of the subject. But although apparently 'shattered' the pieces of the image hover, soft edged in an uncertain space, where meaning falls out of reach between the gaps. Sean Dawson studied his MA at the Royal College of Art. Since graduating in 1995 he has shown in numerous group shows most recently the 'Wreck of hope' at the Nunnery, London; and 'Close up on pattern' at Laure Genillard, London. This is his second solo show, and his first showing at Alfred Camp gallery, formerly '97-99' gallery. |
