Kirsten Glass - YOUTHINKYOUFUCKINSLICK - 05.06 - 27.06.1999

Kirsten Glass paints pictures the way a D.J. samples music. They are made from prefabricated emotional expressions; the words are lyrics sampled from pop tunes, gangsta, rap, or old records, applying a cut'n'paste technique to 'personal expression' (straight-from-the heart, tell-it-like-it-is).

Sentimental or brash, taken from their context the words become blown-up fragments set against a regularised, almost corporate design. The slick presentation style of her pictures counterbalances the artificial emotionality of the lyrics.

The intentionally uninventive layout and inexpressive application of paint is not cynical but an attempt to produce a tone of voice (something like a digitally produced voice) which allows the words and phrases to resonate as painting without becoming a representation of a pop song. The lurid colourfields act like amplification for the viewer's imaginative projection prompted by the subtitle.

Kirsten Glass was born in Belfast in 1975. She is currently studying for her MA at Goldsmiths. The artist has participated in many group shows. This is her first solo exhibition and forms part of Fresh Paint, the gallery's painting programme.
