Tamsin Morse - New Paintings- 08.05 - 30.06.1999

Tamsin Morse is passionate about painting. The intensity of her emotional engagement with luminosity, texture and colour gives her paintings a seductive appeal. They engage in an exuberant exploration of femininity; creating her own exoticised projections. Invitations to try a different sensibility, to allow the experience of looking to become eroticised.

For her paintings she likes to set up a scene, some private game, rummaging in the fancy dress box, donning boas and fantastic wigs, kimonos and feather boas and assumes odd poses for the camera. These images are then subjected to further manipulations, super-imposed, scanned, reversed, tilted and enlarged, until they generate the theme for the picture.

The fragments of stills become gradually transposed and submerged under and into layers of paint until the paint asserts itself as the real character of the picture. Her figures may be almost childishly absorbed in an intimate game, but her chromatic scale affirms a mature sensuality, rich in vermillion and fuchsia, purple and pink.

Tamsin Morse was born in Wokingham in 1975. She graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art last year. This is her first solo exhibition and forms part of Fresh Paint, the galleryıs painting programme.
